A New Standard for AI Communication

Robots.txt has been the standard for communicating with web crawlers for decades. It tells search engine bots which pages to crawl and which to ignore. As AI systems have become major consumers of web content, a new standard has emerged to address their specific needs: LLMs.txt.

LLMs.txt is a plain text file placed at the root of your website — accessible at yourdomain.com/llms.txt — that provides AI language models with structured information about your business and guidance on how to interpret your content.

What LLMs.txt Contains

Unlike robots.txt, which is primarily about access control, LLMs.txt is about context and clarity. A well-constructed LLMs.txt file provides AI systems with a concise, authoritative description of your business, your services, your service area, and any specific guidance about how your content should be interpreted.

It can include a brief description of what your business does, the specific services you offer, the geographic areas you serve, your business category, and any context that helps AI systems understand your business accurately. It can also include links to the most important pages on your website, helping AI systems prioritize which content to read.

Why It Matters

AI systems process enormous amounts of web content. When they encounter your website, they must infer what your business is from the text of your pages. LLMs.txt gives them a shortcut — a single, authoritative source of truth about your business that they can read before processing anything else.

For businesses with complex service offerings, multiple locations, or names that could be ambiguous, LLMs.txt is particularly valuable. It resolves ambiguity before it can cause misrepresentation in AI recommendations.

Implementation

LLMs.txt is a simple text file. It does not require any special technical infrastructure. You create the file, write the content, and place it at the root of your web server. The file should be accessible without authentication.

The content should be written in clear, direct prose — not marketing language. AI systems respond better to factual, specific descriptions than to promotional copy. Describe your business the way you would describe it to a knowledgeable professional, not the way you would describe it in an advertisement.

Keep the file updated. If your services change, your service area expands, or your business evolves, update your LLMs.txt to reflect the current reality. An outdated LLMs.txt can create the same kind of confusion as inconsistent citations.

The Broader Signal

Implementing LLMs.txt is itself a signal. It indicates that your business is aware of and actively participating in the AI ecosystem. As AI systems become more sophisticated, the businesses that have taken the time to communicate clearly with them will have an advantage over those that have not.

LLMs.txt is not a silver bullet. It is one component of a comprehensive GEO strategy. But it is a low-effort, high-signal addition that every business with a website should implement.
